Samara Joy has gained a lot of fame in a short period of time, and it is well deserved.
In addition to a beautiful voice, she has displayed a real understanding of the bebop and swing vocabularies which is reflected in her selection of high-quality jazz songs, her improvising, and her lyric writing.
For this appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she performed her lyrics to Fats Navarro’s “Nostalgia,” a song originally based on the chord changes of “Out Of Nowhere.”
Samara Joy’s vocalese lyrics are very much in the classic bebop tradition and her voice and articulation are typically flawless, sounding a bit like a young Sarah Vaughan without copying Sassy.
