Sullivan Fortner gained some recognition as Roy Hargrove’s pianist during 2010-17 and for his work with Cécile McLorin Salvant but it is as a soloist and leader of a trio that he has been heard at his most creative.
Fortner often hints at earlier periods of jazz in his playing while having an original style of his own.
His solo rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Once I Loved,” while referring to the melody, is quite original, reinventing the song a bit while retaining its essence.
