In the 1950s it was not unusual for a jazz performance to be on television.

Pianist Billy Taylor organized all-star bands for several television series.

For this 1958 project, he leads an orchestra filled with Count Basie alumni and other complementary swing soloists on a version of “One O’Clock Jump.”

Featured soloists are Taylor, tenor-saxophonist Paul Quinichette, trombonist Benny Morton, clarinetist Tony Scott, and trumpeter Buck Clayton.

Also seen in the noteworthy band are trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Carl Pool, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, altoist Sid Cooper, tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster, guitarist Mundell Lowe, bassist Eddie Safranski and drummer Ed Thigpen.
