A spirited version of a famous melody

They were one of the most popular jazz groups of any style in the 1950s and early ’60s, helping to keep Dixieland alive.

The Dukes of Dixieland were led by trumpeter Frank Assunto and his brother, the always-animated trombonist Fred Assunto.

Despite their popularity, which included a long string of albums for the Audio Fidelity label followed by some gems for Columbia, the Dukes were not filmed very often.

Here they are in 1958 with the Assunto Brothers’ father Jac Assunto on second trombone (he also doubled on banjo), clarinetist Jack Meheu, pianist Stanley Mendelson, Bill Porter on tuba, and drummer Red Hawley playing a colorful rendition of “Over The Waves.”
