Small’s in New York has long been legendary for its late-night sessions of spontaneous jazz.
For this version of “Pennies From Heaven,” the performance starts out a bit loose, and then the great young singer Veronica Swift takes control, singing three swinging choruses.
There are spots for trumpeter James Sarno, guitarist Adam Moezinia, pianist Miki Yamanaka, bassist Jonathan Michel, and drummer Jason Brown before the singer takes it out with riffing from trumpeters Sarno and Benny Benack III.
A definite party atmosphere is captured in this film, showing how much fun creating music on the spot can be.
