During his last 30 years, Dr. Lonnie Smith (1942-2021) was one of the top jazz organists.

He first gained recognition for his playing with the George Benson Quartet in 1966 and with Lou Donaldson.

Smith headed some funky jazz al bums of his own during the late 1960s/early ‘70s (eventually leading over 30 albums), had a lower profile during the 1980s and ‘90s, and then made a major comeback in his later years when he recorded for Blue Note.

The organist is heard with his octet (a larger group for him than usual) around 2012, jamming on the funky “Psychedelic Pi” which features guitarist Ed Cherry.
