A well-rounded pianist who always sounds impressive, Sullivan Fortner worked regularly with Roy Hargrove during 2010-17, won the American Pianists Association Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz in 2015, has played often with Cecilia McLorin Salvant, and led his own groups.
“Segment” from 2014 is one of his entries for the American Pianists competition that he won.
The only minor-keyed composition of Charlie Parker, “Segment” starts with Fortner playing solo including a bit of stride piano before he explores the theme with his trio (which includes bassist Nick Tucker and drummer Kenny Phelps) and creates his own ideas out of the classic bop tradition.
