Although some may think that “Singin’ In The Rain” was written in the 1950s for the Gene Kelly film of the same name, it actually originated in the late 1920s.
It was a hit at the time with Cliff Edwards (“Ukulele Ike”) popularizing the song but oddly enough it fell into obscurity and was rarely played during the Swing era and the years that followed before the film made it into a permanent standard.
For this version from 2025 which is taken from one of pianist Emmet Cohen’s now-legendary (and still continuing) series of weekly online performances, his trio with bassist Philip Norris and drummer Hank Allen-Barfield welcomes singer Stella Cole and trumpeter Benny Benack III.
Ms. Cole sings two happy choruses, Cohen plays a melodic improvisation that builds up quite well, Benack creates a spectacular trumpet solo, and the ensemble takes it out with plenty of joy.
