Locksley Wellington “Slide” Hampton (1932-2021) had a busy career for seven decades as a bop-oriented trombonist, arranger, and bandleader.
On Apr. 22, 2017 he celebrated his 85th birthday by performing at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola with a nine-piece group that also included tenor-saxophonist Sam Dillon, baritonist Frank Basile, trumpeters Tony Kadleck and Fabien Mary, trombonists Marshall Gilkes and Ryan Keberle, bassist David Wong, and drummer Charles Ruggiero.
After a spot for baritonist Basile, Hampton takes a lengthy solo that includes a quote from “Happy Birthday” along with plenty of creative ideas, showing that he was still in his musical prime.
