Written by Oscar Hammerstein and Sigmund Romberg for the 1928 operetta “The New Moon,” “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” was soon embraced by the jazz community. The Modern Jazz Quartet began covering the in the early ’50s and kept it as part of their regular catalog long after.

It would also be covered by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Dave Weckl.
