Roscoe Mitchell (who was born in 1940) has been an innovative player and a leader of the jazz avant-garde since the mid-1960s.
He worked with Muhal Richard Abrams’ Experimental Band as early as 1961, joined the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) in 1965, recorded the groundbreaking album Sound and in 1967 formed the Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble which within a couple of years was known as the Art Ensemble Of Chicago.
A master of many reed instruments, Mitchell is best known as an altoist.
70 at the time of this performance, Roscoe Mitchell shows no signs of slowing down or playing it safe during a thoughtful and creative solo improvisation which in spots has him utilizing circular breathing.
