Pepper Adams (1930-86) was one of the giants of the baritone-sax.
His deep guttural tone was very different than that of the lighter sound of Gerry Mulligan, and his superb musicianship kept him in great demand throughout his career.
On this performance from the Antibes Jazz Festival on July 23, 1964, Adams is accompanied by Lionel Hampton; the baritonist was appearing with Hampton’s specially assembled tentet that day.
Adams is showcased throughout “Sophisticated Lady,” stretching out while Hampton and the rhythm section accompany him.
This is one of only a handful of times that Pepper Adams and Lionel Hampton were documented playing together.
