One of the finest tenor-saxophonists of all time, Dexter Gordon always had a distinctive tone, a direct and relaxed style (taking time to get his message across yet not wasting any notes), and he created a friendly and accessible atmosphere.

Gordon had already been a major stylist for 35 years when he performed this version of his original “Tanya” in 1979 but he showed no sign of running out of gas or creative ideas.

Filmed for a television show in Iowa, Gordon is teamed with one of his favorite rhythm sections, one comprised of pianist George Cables, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden; the full tenor solo is here before the fadeout.
