Don Byas (1913-72) was one of the great tenor saxophonists, but because he moved permanently to Europe in 1946 (only returning to the U.S. for one much later visit), he has often been a bit overlooked in the jazz history books.
Influenced and inspired by Coleman Hawkins, Byas built upon Hawkins’ innovations and was a modern player, a swing-to-bop improviser with a large tone and a fairly adventurous style.
He is featured in a Paris concert in 1965 in top form, showcased on “Tenderly” while accompanied by the Earl Hines Trio.
