The Girl From Ipanema – 1964

 Harry “Sweets” Edison

A tasteful and at times adventurous feature for the trumpeter

“The Girl From Ipanema” was a fairly new song when trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison used it as his feature during a 1964 concert.

Accompanied by pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Jimmy Woode, and drummer Jo Jones, with the great Coleman Hawkins looking on, Edison is showcased on the Antonio Carlos Jobim classic.

Playing muted, Edison states the melody and then in his boppish phrases shows a bit what he learned from Dizzy Gillespie while sounding very much like himself.

Particularly interesting is the playing of bassist Woode throughout, not only backing Edison but coming up with countermelodies and consistently inventive ideas.
