Dave Bartholomew (1918-2019) was a trumpeter, arranger-composer and a record producer who was closely associated with Fats Domino and was part of the New Orleans music scene for 80 years.

Bartholomew originally played New Orleans jazz and swing but, starting in 1945 when he formed the Dew Droppers, he was a major force in the New Orleans r&b scene, becoming a record producer for Imperial in the late 1940s and working with Fats Domino (starting in 1949) and other local artists who he helped have hit records.

On this intriguing clip from 2001, he rehearses a band comprised mostly of former members of Fats Domino’s band (with Mitch Woods on piano) on “Big Easy Boogie.”

Narrated by Mitch Woods, this brief documentary shows Dave Bartholomew in action, creating a happy atmosphere for the musicians.
