Tete Montoliu (1933-97) was one of Europe’s finest jazz musicians, a pianist with superb technique and a mastery of modern mainstream jazz who could hold his own with just about any American pianist.
Based in Spain throughout his life, Montoliu was born blind and spent most of his life in Europe.
He toured with Lionel Hampton in 1956 and appeared on records along the way with Dexter Gordon (at least seven albums), Eddie Harris, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ben Webster, Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Hargrove, and fellow pianists Chick Corea and Hank Jones but mostly performed at the head of his own trios.
From 1987, he is featured on a sensitive version of Johnny Mandel’s “The Shadow Of Your Smile” while accompanied by bassist Horacio Fumero and drummer Peer Wyboris.
