The Shadow of Your Smile

Barney Kessel

Sweden, 1973

Barney Kessel performs a lovely solo rendition of “The Shadow of Your Smile” on a 1973 episode of Swedish television.

Kessel is one of the most famous practitioners of the chord-melody style of solo guitar, a technique in which the guitarist incorporates the melody into the chord progression and thus plays the melody and harmony at once.

“The Shadow of Your Smile” was written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster for the 1965 film The Sandpiper. Although the tune is most famous as a pop song – covered by Tony Bennet, Barbara Streisand, Perry Como and others – it has also become a favorite among jazz musicians.
