Bassist Milt Hinton (1910-2000) had a remarkable musical life, making over 1,200 jazz recordings (and a countless number of commercial dates) in a career that spanned from the late 1920s to the late 1990s.

Hinton became famous in jazz circles for his playing with the Cab Calloway Orchestra during the 1930s and ‘40s and was considered one of the finest and most modern jazz bassists before the emergence of Jimmy Blanton in 1939.

He was a busy studio musician in the 1950s and ‘60s yet always found the time to play jazz, and he did not slow down until late in his life.

Milt Hinton is featured on a rare unaccompanied bass solo on this 1991 version of “Three Little Words”; pianist Larry Novak and guitarist Herb Ellis only play a few notes at the end of the performance.
