Although he tends to be underrated, Dave Kikoski has been a major jazz pianist since the mid-1980s, leading at least18 albums of his own and working with Roy Haynes, Randy Brecker, Billy Hart, Craig Handy, Pat Martino, the Mingus Big Band and many others.
While usually heard with a trio (he has not up to this date recorded an album of unaccompanied piano solos), Kikoski is obviously quite capable of playing very self-sufficient piano solos.
He performs an explorative version of Chick Corea’s “Quartet #1” from Corea’s “Three Quartets.”
To his credit, Dave Kikoski interprets the complex and rarely-performed number in his own voice rather than sounding like Chick Corea, creating an intriguing and fascinating version.
