In addition to a countless number of other projects, bassist Ron Carter has been leading a regular trio since 2002.
The original group featured guitarist Russell Malone and the late pianist Mulgrew Miller; Donald Vega took Miller’s place in 2012.
On this three-song miniset from 2022, the Carter-Malone-Vega Trio begins with the bluesy and romantic ballad “Candlelight,” an ensemble piece with the guitarist in the lead.
Carter is showcased on his unaccompanied “Blues for Tiny Desk,” walking his bass at several tempos.
The outing concludes with the peaceful but lightly swinging “Eddie’s Theme” which includes piano and guitar solos along with a pretty melody.
