It has often been said that to be a mature jazz improviser, one has to know how to embrace a melody and show self-restraint in their solo.
Mike Casey, an up-and-coming tenor-saxophonist who in 2023 has come out with Public Access WPAA session EP, his eight release in seven years, certainly shows restraint on his rendition of “Space Chill.”
Joined by bassist Matt Dwonszyk and drummer Corey Garcia, Casey sounds quite relaxed and soulful as he states the melody of his “Space Chill,” improvises a bit, and leaves space for a fine solo by Dwonszyk.
