Eugene Ammons was a tenor saxophonist who founded the instrument’s “Chicago school.” Blurring the stylings of Ben Webster and Lester Young with bebop with chromaticism, Ammons sought to make sax playing more expressive. He kept in touch with jazz’s roots – making the Billboard black pop charts and carrying along with him his unique brand of soul jazz.
