Benny Carter (1907-2003) had quite a remarkable career.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that as an altoist, an occasional trumpeter, arranger, composer, and bandleader, Benny Carter was at his musical prime for 70 years (1927-97), a period when he was continually active and making rewarding recordings.
Carter is featured at a Copenhagen club in 1985 performing his composition “When Lights Are Low” (which he had written 50 years earlier) with an all-star quartet also featuring pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Ed Thigpen.
