Trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison was born on October 10, 1915 in Columbus, Ohio.
Edison was already playing trumpet with local bands by the age of 12.
That’s not a misprint. Professional gigs at 12.
At 22, Edison joined the Count Basie Orchestra alongside Freddie Green, Jo Jones, and Lester Young, who gave him his nickname.
Edison spent the rest of his career as a sought-after studio musician, bandleader, and freelance trumpeter for various orchestras.
He got the nickname “Sweets” from Pres (AKA Lester Young).
