A welcome reunion

When pianist Dave Brubeck’s longtime quartet with Paul Desmond broke up in 1967, Brubeck soon put together a new group featuring baritonist Gerry Mulligan.

Desmond, who had recorded two albums with Mulligan in the 1950s, enjoyed several reunions with Brubeck after 1967 including this special performance from Oct. 31, 1971 at the touring Newport in Europe festival.

The Dave Brubeck Trio with bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson is joined by both Mulligan and Desmond for a lengthy “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” which gives each member of the quintet an opportunity to solo.

Brubeck’s trio next stretches out on an original piece before the set concludes with Desmond making the group a quartet like old times, playing beautifully.
