Catherine Russell, the daughter of 1930s bandleader and pianist Luis Russell, had a busy career going as a background singer with major pop acts when she decided that it was time for her to explore her roots.

A decade ago she took the leap and became one of the top swing singers in jazz, using her strong voice and understanding of the vintage style to create her versions of songs that she had long loved.

On this cooking version of “You Can’t Pull The Wool Over My Eyes,” a song that Billie Holiday had recorded in the ‘30s, Catherine Russell takes a spirited vocal chorus and there are solos from pianist Mark Shane and guitarist Matt Munisteri (with bassist Tal Ronen keeping the music swinging) before the singer takes it out in rousing fashion.
