Gertrude “Ma” Rainey recorded “Deep Moaning Blues” in Chicago during 1928 accompanied by Georgia Tom Dorsey (piano), Martell Pettiford (banjo), Herman Brown (tub & drum), and Carl Reid (kazoo & jug). At the time that Ma Rainey made this recording her older style of blues was being replaced in popularity by newer up tempo offerings.

A powerful vocalist Gertrude “Ma” Rainey was one of the first blues singers to attain wide spread popularity. She Recorded extensively and her music would served as an influence to many including the legendary Bessie Smith, setting the standard.
