Sonny Boy Nelson aka Eugene Powell (guitar & vocals) performs a age old blues in Greenville, Mississippi on August 31, 1978 filmed by Alan Lomax, John Bishop, and Worth Long.
A guitarist form the age of seven Eugene Powell would become equally proficient on banjo, mandolin, violin, and harmonica. As a boy he performed at picnics and suppers with his half-brother, mandolinist Bennie “Sugar” Wilson to earn money. A lifelong delta resident he once worked with Sam Chatmon’s family on the Kelly Drew Plantation, and later married fellow blues singer Mississippi Matilda.
