Jaybird Coleman

May 20, 1896 – January 28, 1950

Recorded in Birmingham, Alabama on August 13, 1927 by “Jaybird” Coleman (harmonica & vocals).

Born in Gainesville, Alabama, Burl “Jaybird” Coleman started playing harmonica at the age of twelve and began preforming blues for U.S. troops while serving in the Army during World War I.

Returning from the military with the nicknamed “Jaybird”, he would tour the South with Big Joe Williams in the 1920s as a member of the “Birmingham Jug Band.”

Coleman is most famous for the solo recordings he made in 1927.
