Blues at the Opry

Nashville’s resident harmonica blues man DeFord Bailey performs his “Pan American Blues” at the Grand Ole Opry in 1967.

Upon moving to Nashville, Tennessee when he was nineteen Deford Bailey where he performed locally as an amateur. Following his first radio appearance on WSM radio he returned to the station for “WSM Barn Dance” where he first broadcast his train inspired harmonica original “Pan American Blues.” He became the first African-American to perform on the Grand Ole Opry and toured from the late ’20 until 1941 with many country stars including Uncle Dave Macon, Bill Monroe, and Roy Acuff.
