Duke Ellington was very fortunate to have Johnny Hodges as his alto soloist for 38 years (1928-51 and 1955-70).
Hodges, who was equally skilled on blues and swinging pieces, had such a beautiful tone that no one could top him on ballads.
During three songs from a 1969 concert with Ellington’s orchestra, Hodges is showcased on “Black Butterfly,” “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be,” and “Laying Down Mellow,” playing with beauty no matter what the tempo or mood.
