10 great women in jazz
A very short list
Contemporary and past
Women have been accepted as jazz singers since the beginning.
As instrumentalists, not so much.
Thankfully things are changing.
In this compilation, produced by one of our favorite YouTube channel producers, meet ten artists, contemporary and past – some well known and some not – you’ll be glad to know.
The compilation starts with Mary Lou Williams, a fantastic player, who also deserves to be known as a colleague and TEACHER to Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Charlie Parker and many others.
Would bebop have happened the way it did without her contribution? That’s a serious question.
