Terence Blanchard has led many groups since the 1980s and has long been one of jazz’s top trumpeters in addition to being a skilled composer of soundtracks for Spike Lee.

For this 2012 performance, Blanchard leads one of his finest bands, a quintet with tenor-saxophonist Brice Winston, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Joshua Crumbly, and drummer Kendrick Scott.

The piece begins with the leader’s trumpet, there is a muscular and dynamic tenor solo by the underrated Winston, and then surprisingly the piece quiets down for Blanchard’s entrance.

Soon the tempo and the passion pick up, Blanchard creates an exciting statement, and Almazan takes a fluent solo before the quick melody chorus closes the stirring performance.
