Carmen McRae (1920-94) was one of the top jazz singers from the 1950s into the ’90s.
Her distinctive voice, swinging placement of notes, willingness to stretch herself and whatever song she was interpreting, and her behind-the-beat phrasing made her an influential force.
In 1961, she performed “Comes Love” (a song identified with her idol Billie Holiday) on the Ed Sullivan Show, taking the tune at a perfect medium-slow tempo and making each note count.
