Arturo O’Farrill, the son of the influential Afro-Cuban jazz bandleader Chico O ‘Farrill, was originally a bop-oriented pianist-arranger who worked with Carla Bley, Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Lester Bowie, and Harry Belafonte.
He rediscovered his roots in Latin jazz in the 1990s and worked with his father’s big band which he gradually took over due to Chico O’Farrill’s failing health.
Arturo O’Farrill formed the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in 2001 which was connected with Jazz at Lincoln Center until it became independent in 2007.
For a stirring version of Ray Santos’ “3D Mambo” in 2014, O’Farrill leads his orchestra with solo spots for altoist David DeJesus, trombonist Frank Cohen, and trumpeter John Bailey.
