Moanin’ – 1988

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band

Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Jordan are featured

In 1988 Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers (which at the time included tenor-saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Benny Green) were turned into a big band for their appearance at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival.

For this exciting version of Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin,” trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is mostly on fire and clearly enjoying himself, guitarist Stanley Jordan (who never recorded with Blakey) fits right in during his typically miraculous tapping solo (check out his hands), and bassist Peter Washington gets a spot.

The audience is rightfully riled up.
