Laura – 1996

James Carter

Carter with a string orchestra on a melodic version of the ballad

A brilliant tenor-saxophonist who tends to be underrated despite his superb technique, knowledge of earlier styles, and wit, James Carter has been near the top of his field since the early 1990s.

On the television special Eastwood After Hours, a tribute to the more jazz-oriented music that was heard in Clint Eastwood films, Carter is joined by a large orchestra conducted by Lennie Niehaus.

The arrangement is similar to that heard on Charlie Parker’s Bird with Strings recording with Carter mostly caressing the melody of “Laura” with warmth and sensitivity.
