Codona was a once-in-a-lifetime band, a trio consisting of Don Cherry on pocket cornet, flutes and various exotic instruments, Collin Walcott (best known for being with Oregon) on sitar and tabla, and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos.

Each of the musicians went beyond jazz, utilized unusual instruments, and created improvisations that can best be described as free form World Music.

They recorded three albums during 1978-82 for ECM, but they really needed to be seen live to be fully appreciated.

Here is a rare clip from a concert in 1984 with Cherry’s cornet joined by sitar and percussion for a wide-ranging group improvisation that is both simple and complex.
