Joe Venuti (1903-78) was the first great jazz violinist, recording many classic solos as early as the mid-to-late 1920s; he still ranks among the top ever.
In 1971 and 1974 Venuti visited Italy where he played with guitarist Lino Patruno’s group in Milan.
This spontaneous version of “Sweet Georgia Brown” has Venuti joined by Patruno’s band and taking a couple of hot solos.
The Italian combo is excellent and Patruno scats a chorus but the violinist is the obvious star.
