Louis Armstrong was nearing the end of his career in 1967 and would soon be forced to take much of two years off due to health problems.

But he is in typically jubilant form during his June 4, 1967 appearance on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.

Joined by trombonist Tyree Glenn and members of the Tonight Show Orchestra (including Tommy Newsom on clarinet), Armstrong emphasizes his vocals on “Hello Dolly” and “Mame” although he does take a hot trumpet solo on “Hello Dolly.”
