A consistently creative pianist whose solos are filled with surprises and a full knowledge of jazz history, Sullivan Fortner can always be counted on to play inventive music.

For this version of “All The Things You Are,” performed in a trio with bassist Nick Tucker and drummer Kenny Phelps, Fortner builds much of the first half of the performance off of Dizzy Gillespie’s riff that the trumpeter used as an introduction in his version.

This rendition is actually played at a fast tempo but, since Fortner performs it using a lot of space and Tucker plays rhythmic phrases rather than walking the bass, it sounds as if it is being performed at half the speed.

It is a thought-provoking performance that reinvents the standard.
