The Woodstock Jazz Festival

Nana Vasconcelos

Woodstock 1981

There was a Woodstock JAZZ Festival too…in 1981.

It was a fundraiser for the Creative Music Studio.

It was founded in 1971 by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso, and Ornette Coleman.

Hundreds of musicians taught there including Don Cherry, Dave Holland, Carla Bley, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Gorn, Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Giuffre, Wadada Leo Smith, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Pat Metheny, George Lewis, Lee Konitz, Nana Vasconcelos, Trilok Gurtu, Collin Walcott, Oliver Lake, John Cage, Ismet Siral, Ed Blackwell, and Cecil Taylor.

The original advisory board included composer John Cage, conductor/musician Gil Evans, philosopher/educator Buckminster Fuller, composer George Russell, and composer/conductor Gunther Schuller.

Those where the days…

Note: Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos is playing an instrument called the berimbau.
