Composed by Mongo Santamaria and first recorded in 1959, “Afro Blue” has since become a jazz standard. The song has become most closely associated with John Coltraine’s arrangement and it is unique for using Afro-influenced hemiola, or cross rhythm.

In 1973 it received another famous cover by McCoy Tyner.
