During his prime years (1960-90), Freddie Hubbard had very few competitors on trumpet or flugelhorn.
A brilliant player with his own sound out of the Clifford Brown/Lee Morgan tradition, Hubbard’s playing was always outstanding and sometimes astounding.
This interesting and informal version of “Autumn Leaves” has Hubbard surrounded by fans and the musicians of the Benko Dixieland Band in Budapest, Hungary.
After Hubbard takes a fine four-minute solo, he cheers on another trumpeter who takes a muted spot and, after concise piano and bass solos, Hubbard takes it out in classy fashion.
