When Gregory Porter burst upon the jazz scene in 2008-9, he created a bit of a sensation with his deep and flexible baritone voice, his songwriting abilities, and his willingness to stretch himself and his musicians, often becoming quite passionate.

While Porter’s performances have become safer and more predictable in recent years, he still has that wonderful voice and enormous potential as a jazz singer.

This performance from the Skopje Jazz festival on Oct. 17, 2015, has Gregory Porter singing one of his philosophical and insightful originals, “Be Good,” with the band that was with him at the beginning of his solo career.

Altoist Yosuke Sato, pianist Chip Crawford, bassist Aaron James, and drummer Emanuel Harrold accompany the singer on this remake of “Be Good,” the title cut from Porter’s 2011 album.
