Lyrical but inventive ballad playing by the veteran altoist

Few jazz musicians had as long a career playing creatively at their prime as altoist Lee Konitz.

From the time he joined Claude Thornhill’s orchestra in 1947 up until his final performance 74 years later at his 92nd birthday in 2021, Konitz had an original and personal tone, a thoughtful yet explorative style of his own, and a consistent musical curiosity that led him to always stretch himself.

From 2013, the 83-year-old altoist is featured playing “Body And Soul” with pianist Dan Tepfer, bassist Jeremy Stratton, and drummer George Schuller.

As usual Konitz never plays the obvious even though he had already been playing the standard for over 65 years.
