A beautiful yet virtuosic flugelhorn solo by the great Sandoval

One of the most brilliant trumpeters of all time, Arturo Sandoval has sometimes been accused of being a bit too flashy, emphasizing high notes, and having too much technique (as if the latter were possible).

This performance from early in his career is a bit different with Sandoval on flugelhorn being showcased on “Body And Soul” with the Orquestra Jazz Sinfonica in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Sandoval is in the spotlight throughout, building his solo from the melody, displaying a beautiful tone, playing some boppish ideas, and, at the four-minute mark, creating some remarkable runs before ending with a tasteful cadenza.

Arturo Sandoval performs a quietly dazzling solo without playing a single high note
