J.J. Johnson (1924-2001) was one of the greatest trombonists of all time, a masterful technician who in the mid-1940s showed other trombonists (by example) how to play bebop on his potentially awkward horn.
Richard Davis, who was born in 1930, has been a virtuosic and very versatile bassist for over 70 years.
The two teamed up for “Bud’s Blues” while on a European tour with the Nat Adderley Quintet in 1987, and the results are lightly swinging, subtle, and witty.
