There is no real explanation for the musical genius of Buddy Rich (1917-87)

Self-taught as a drummer when he was just 1 ½, Rich’s power, endurance and technique simply dwarf all other drummers of any style or period.

One of the few swing era tunes that were in the repertoire of the Buddy Rich Big Band, “Bugle Call Rag” has short solos for several of Rich’s sidemen (including tenor-saxophonist Steve Marcus) but is mostly a showcase for the drummer’s drive and high-powered swing; his breaks are perfect and his accompaniment of the band should be studied by other drummers.
